Horse Races

Date: Aug 15, 2019
Superintendent: Bethany Aurin, Tina Decker
For well over 100 years, horse racing has been a prominent pastime in the Yampa Valley; originally the Ute Indians raced along the banks of the Yampa and lower Elk rivers. With the arrival of beef cattle, many ranchers also began to host match races during their brandings and ranch rodeos. Chariot races also became extremely popular beginning in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s.

The Routt County Fair has continued this great tradition by including horse races every year during the fair. This year, there will be two age divisions and all are welcome to participate. To honor our ranching heritage, all participants must ride in a stock saddle. Match races will be run and the fastest two times will compete against each for a buckle and a cash award (riders under 18 years old must wear a helmet).

Contact 970-846-7883 for entry information or stop by the Fair Office.
